Blog changes on their way

April 25th, 2009

Since I’ve been having these thoughts, I figured I would disclose the changes I’m planning on doing to the blog. They arn’t bad changes, just some that will give me more to write about, and more for you to read:

  1. I’m extending the scope of this blog. I’m spreading it to the entire metaverse, with my own definition of “metaverse” as a guide.
  2. I’m going to change the theme to something more suitable. A cyberpunk or technological theme, maybe?

Oh, and my definition of metaverse is this, in case you were wondering:

The metaverse is comprised of many people, companies, sites and protocols. Any protocol, such as IRC, MUCKs and so on, that allow people to communicate with oneanother, is part of the metaverse.

With any luck, it should make for some more intresting stuff for you to take a look at.

The Adult-Only Filter: My views on it

April 24th, 2009

A while back, I wrote a post apologising to the Residents about blindly agreeing with some of the Research Team’s changes regarding Adult Content.

After looking at it from all possible angles, I can see problems arising:

  • Even though there is now some infomation regarding what fits with each of the ratings, it’s all greek to me. What about making it simple and clear?
  • What about some other cases? How will those be handled?
  • What about Adult Content in your own personal home? Will we be allowed that or not, unless I’m in a Adult-Rated area?

The last case is probably one that really worries me. In fact, it’s the only one. Everywhere else, I’ll leave it to their owner’s judgement calls.

Now, I’ll give you a quote from the blog post that inspired this one:

But, if somebody fills abuse report against me because of that, be sure I’ll do the same because of breaking my privacy. And I want you to do the same. Sorting the content geographicaly is one thing, peeking through the curtains to enforce one’s ideas over the whole world is another. I love my world to be free.

dandellion Kimban

And here is a quote from my comment there:

I think the only reason anyone would go inside another Resident’s house, then complain about what’s inside, is *more than likely* trying to force some social or religious view. If they want to do that, then they should expect to be kicked and banned. If they moan about that, then tough.

Those quotes alone speak enough about my fear regarding this change. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be many awnsers forthcomming, and I, sure as anyone else, don’t have them either. Of course, there *are* some good sides to it that have been pointed out to me by dandellion Kimban in the blog post I’ve linked to:

  • For places like Xcite! and high quality content, it will reduce the ammount of clatter from the customers.
  • It will reduce or eliminate poorly-built content.

Even with those good points, I can’t really see it as a good idea. I might not be able to stop them, but I hope that me, and every other Resident out there, can at least get them to do it properly. It may be tough, but keep up the pressure, and I’m certain it might make them get it right.

If it fails…well, there are always other places to go to…

I have to apologise…

March 31st, 2009

It’s rare that I do this publicly, but I have to issue an apology to all the Residents.

I’m really sorry for speaking positively about the proposed changes, namely the “Adult-Only” zone, the limitations on area operations, and now, the teleportation fee.

I was initially hostile to any criticism, but mainly that was due to me thinking along the lines of “give it a chance”, and now, after looking at it from all possible angles, I now have have one thought on my mind:

The Research Team have lost the plot, in my view.

There are a few people there, namely the Documentation Team* (Jon, Jeremy, Kate and Torley) that keep my faith in it. Sooner or later, though, even they wont be able to help me see it through.

You know, I was denying the fact that the grid is doomed, and the outworld press has been running with the story. I have to apologise to them too, as I know now:

The grid is doomed, unless the Research Team start thinking in reality.

I’m really sorry everyone, I just hope that I’ve not offended anyone seriously.

*They’re responsible for managing inworld and outworld documentation, so we are more informed about things, or as much as the rest of the Research Team allow them to let us.

I’m having a personal crisis, bear with me

January 28th, 2009

You know, I’ve come to a horrid realisation.

No-one seems to care about the ToS and the CS anymore.

As a result, behaviour that would normally go challenged, means that questionable activities go without a bat of an eyelid.

As a result, I believe, the Research Team have fell into “Since the Residents don’t care about the rules, why should we?” This, in turn causes other Residents to say “They don’t care about the rules, so why should we?” You see what I’m getting at? It’s a vicious cycle.

We have forgotten about rules like “Disclosure” , “Intolerance” and so on. Do I care if such-a-body is a male outworld, yet has a female persona inworld? Big hint: NO! I don’t want to hear it, it’s stupid!

Yet I’m sure that Residents will try to wipe my complaint by saying “We’re doing a service” Reality check here! You’ve still broken the rules!

I feel that it’s a symptom of a bigger problem. It seems to me that my fellow Residents want to behave like they’re in (and I do apologise for using an Outworld belief and another Virtual World) World of Warcraft, where they’re handed everything on a silver platter. Here, the Research Team assumes (at this moment in time, it’s changing, so I’ve heard), that you are an adult in your Outworld location. As a result, they think that you should behave like one.

Yet, my fellow Residents continue to outdo themselves in behaving otherwise! I have heard rumours that many Teen Residents, having graduated to this world from their own part of it, said things along the lines of “This is the main world?!” If they’re saying that, then something’s wrong here.

Come on, Residents! Get Real! We’re supposed to be better than this!

Whew, now I feel better for saying all that. It was just like a bad day inworld, or like an existentialistic nightmare. More realistic, but just as horrid.

Conspiracy Theories

January 21st, 2009

I wasn’t looking forward to writing this. Maybe it’s because I’m going to support an unpopluar viewpoint which will get me hated by most Residents. However, there must come a time where you have to say your piece about it.

So this morning, I recived an ExtraNet message about a merger. I checked it out, and it seems that two services, XStreetSL and OnRez, are being merged and put under the stewardship of the Research Team. Now, I don’t know about you, but looking at it, it’s generated one thing I hate the most.

Now, I know what you’re going to say. “Jaymes, what are you talking about? How is the merger got to do with anything?”

Glad you asked.

I’m sick to death of conspiracy theories, okay? The merger has generated another one. It’s something along the lines of:

“Oh, the Research Team are going to monopolise the shopping services!” Now, to me, it’s another conspiracy theory.

Mergers are happening outworld, and yet, you complain about that?!

I don’t like hearing about them! Yet, people are forcing me to look at them, at least, indirectly. Why can’t I enjoy the world in peace? Oh wait, you won’t let me, will you?

I for one, am glad that it’s happened, I don’t have to remember as many details! One place, and I don’t even have to go anywhere else!

I know I will be critized to the edges of the world, but I don’t care.

Linden Bears: A Clarification

January 9th, 2009

My last post may have left you going “Huh?” So, I’ll elaborate.

Each person who is part of the Research Team can be identifed by having the last name “Linden” These people mantain the world.

Most of them (although some don’t, most have one), have a bear which is associated with them. These are called “Linden Bears”

Some Residents have made collecting them a pasttime, and actively look for them.

Hope it clears things up!

Resident Bears?

January 9th, 2009

While I was putting out my collection of Linden Bears (somthing I’m planning on being a collector of), I had a thought.

What if the Residents had an oppotunity to make their own Bears?

I’m certain that there would be plenty, given that there are lots of Residents, but It’s something I’ve been thinking about.

Would it be a project worth looking at?

Reasons from…somewhere…

January 8th, 2009

This has been trodden on, bulldozed and purged with fire and salt, but I have to get my perspective in. As a note, I want to keep it within Reason, and avoid conspiracy theories.

So, let’s talk about the current OpenSpace war.

The reasons given, in case you’re new to it, is that the simulation system was being overloaded with people abusing them, using temp-rezzers and so on. As a result, it affected everyone else with them. That’s becasue the space was being shared with three others on the same core (which is true and been talked about a few times).

Ordinal Malaprop says it all better than I can, so I suggest you take a look. In this case, there are some things that need to be asked.

Why wasn’t this handled already when they were first released? I don’t know. Speaking as an Unaligned (which is neither on the side of the Reasearch Team, nor SOS, which is one of the protest groups), I think somewhere along the line, a few sanity chips got knocked loose or completely fried!

On a similar-to-but-not-quite topic, I’m not going to be liked very much. I’ve never stayed away from the place during the blackout, among other things.

Maybe I should build a fallout shelter for my land and stay there a while. (That was a joke, in case you’re wondering)

January 8th, 2009

Ah yes, before I write anymore here, I forgot to do the intro. So, here we go.

I’m Jaymes Kjeller, arrived into the world on 18th Febuary 2008. I’m just generally an explorer, checking things out, doing things, maybe building them, you get the idea.

I have various different forms, some human, some not-so human, but they’re all me.

Now, I can’t think of anything else, so see you around.

Online and Ready!

January 8th, 2009

So here we are, in a new blog! However, the point of it is still going to remain the same. Welcome to my new space!

All that’s not intended to mean much, if anything, but still, it’s where I’ll be putting various things here.

[NOTE: Yes, it will be "in-character", or as close as you can get with an avatar, but still.]
